What is an interior architecture major?

Interior architecture programs prepare individuals to apply architectural principles in the design of structural interiors for living, recreational, and business purposes and to function as professional interior architects. Courses may include instruction in architecture, structural systems design, heating and cooling systems, occupational and safety standards, interior design, specific end-use applications, and professional responsibilities and standards.

How popular is interior architecture as a major?

Each year, around 470 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 5 students obtain an associate degree in interior architecture. In 2021, 545 students received a bachelor's degree and 7 students received an associate degree. This is 10% more interior architecture majors than there were in 2020. Interior architecture is a relatively uncommon major within architecture.
