What is an illustration major?

Illustration students use artistic techniques to develop and execute interpretations of the concepts of authors and designers to specifications. Course concentrations include: book illustration, fashion illustration, map illustration, rendering, exhibit preparation, textual layout, cartooning, and the use of various artistic techniques as requested by clients.

How popular is illustration as a major?

Each year, around 1,970 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 200 students obtain an associate degree in illustration. In 2021, 2,034 students received a bachelor's degree and 248 students received an associate degree. This is relatively the same number of illustration majors as there were in 2020. Illustration is a relatively popular major compared to other art majors.
