Students studying German language and literature concentrate on one or more of the Germanic languages of Western, Central, and Northern Europe. It includes instruction in philology, linguistics, dialects and pidgins, literature, and applications to business, science/technology, and other settings.

How popular is German language and literature as a major?

Each year, around 1,080 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 20 students obtain an associate degree in German language and literature. In 2021, 946 students received a bachelor's degree and 24 students received an associate degree. This is 8% fewer German language and literature majors than there were in 2020. German language and literature is a relatively popular major compared to other foreign languages majors.
