How popular is game design and interactive media as a major?
Each year, around 1,400 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 430 students obtain an associate degree in game design and interactive media. In 2021, 1,301 students received a bachelor's degree and 439 students received an associate degree. This is 4% fewer game design and interactive media majors than there were in 2020. Game design and interactive media is a relatively popular major compared to other design majors.

If you want to get into the game industry you need to attend a university with connections. The game industry is infamously hard to get into, especially if you're going into the art pipeline like I am. I'm lucky to attend a university where alumni connections and networking is highly emphasized, meaning our curriculum is tailored for specific parts of the industry and that we have current industry professionals teaching these subjects. You may go somewhere with a great curriculum but if you don't have a connection to get into the door of a studio your resume will drown with the 300+ other applicants. Also, just have fun! It's going to be rough learning so many different disciplines inside of game production but if your passionate and can find the drive to succeed you will get where you're supposed to be.
That to never give up on a subject like this. I'm sure they are going to do great and to make sure that this is something that they want to learn about.
