If you are going into family studies, have an open mind! You will learn about a lot of things that maybe you have never thought about before when it comes to different family dynamics and situations. Be prepared to improve your life because every day as you learn more, you will see how to apply it to your situation if it is through your self-love, relationships, and empathy for others. I would advise all future students to take every opportunity given to apply for internships and do not be afraid to ask your professors for help or advice. They have been doing this for a long time and will have great insights to help you reach your full potential. Don't forget to push yourself and set high goals with plans on how to reach them. Share your goals and plans with those around you to help keep you accountable, and lastly, it is important to have a "why" as to the decision of your major. What are you hoping to accomplish and change in the world with your degree in Family Science?
I would tell all future students considering the Family and consumer science career that there is a place for everyone. The subjects covered are so diverse and you are bound to find something that you are passionate about. My major is useful and will allow me a wide variety of future job opportunities. The professors are amazing and extremely innovative. I feel like I have become more innovative during projects and more understanding towards other groups of individuals. There is a ton of networking opportunities, and I feel like I could go almost anywhere or do nearly anything with the skills that I have learned. I would tell students not to limit themselves. And in every teaching opportunity ask yourself what you want to get out of it. Seize the moments given to you. You will have an endless amount of chances to make a difference if you choose to. Plus you get to work with an extremely wide variety of individuals. Every day is a learning opportunity.
This is an applied major, so my advice to students in Family Studies would be to utilize the concepts you are taught in the classroom and apply them to your personal life for a better understanding. This will help you make connections and advance in your career!
