What is a family and community services major?

Family and community service studies concentrate on the development and implementation of public, private, and voluntary support services for individuals, families, and localities and that prepares individuals to function in a variety of occupations promoting family life and family/community development. Course concentrations include family systems, human development, social services, community social and economic development, social policy, voluntary sector activities, and outreach and community education.

How popular is family and community services as a major?

Each year, around 1,110 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 130 students obtain an associate degree in family and community services. In 2021, 1,071 students received a bachelor's degree and 75 students received an associate degree. This is 4% more family and community services majors than there were in 2020. Family and community services is a relatively popular major compared to other public policy and social services majors.
