What is an exercise physiology major?

Exercise physiology students learn the physiological processes involved in physical or motor activity, including sensorimotor interactions, response mechanisms, and the effects of injury, disease, and disability. Course topics include muscular and skeletal anatomy, molecular and cellular basis of muscle contraction, fuel utilization, neurophysiology of motor mechanics, systemic physiological responses such as respiration, blood flow, and endocrine secretions, fatigue and exhaustion, muscle and body training, physiology of specific exercises and activities, physiology of injury, and the effects of disabilities and disease.

How popular is exercise physiology as a major?

Each year, around 3,720 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 10 students obtain an associate degree in exercise physiology. In 2021, 4,031 students received a bachelor's degree and fewer than 5 students received an associate degree. This is 7% more exercise physiology majors than there were in 2020. Exercise physiology is one of the most popular majors within kinesiology and physical therapy.
