What is an equine studies major?
Equine studies focus on the horse, horsemanship, and related subjects and prepare individuals to care for horses and horse equipment, ride and drive horses for leisure, sport, show, and professional purposes, and manage the training of horses and riders. Course topics include horse breeding, nutrition, health, and safety; history of the horse and horsemanship; horse development and training; riding and equestrian technique; stable, paddock, and track management; and equipment maintenance and repair.

How popular is equine studies as a major?
Each year, around 490 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 320 students obtain an associate degree in equine studies. In 2021, 454 students received a bachelor's degree and 254 students received an associate degree. This is 10% fewer equine studies majors than there were in 2020. Equine studies is a relatively popular major compared to other agricultural sciences majors.

Share your experiencePut yourself out there and go for it. Some people won’t believe you can make a career out of training horses but you can make a big difference if it’s what you are called to do. You are needed!
Perdue your passion and stay dedicated to your coursework. The industry needs more equestrians. I prefer to handwrite my notes, especially when it comes to parts of the horse.
Even if it's not required by the school, you will want to have access to a horse. Best way to learn about horses is hands on and being able to apply what you learn physically.
