What is an environmental health major?

This curriculum focuses on the application of environmental sciences, public health, the biomedical sciences, and environmental toxicology to the study of environmental factors affecting human health, safety, and related ecological issues, and prepares individuals to function as professional environmental health specialists. It includes instruction in epidemiology, biostatistics, toxicology, public policy analysis, public management, risk assessment, communications, environmental law, occupational health and safety emergency response, and applications such as air quality, food protection, radiation protection, solid and hazardous waste management, water quality, soil quality, noise abatement, housing quality, and environmental control of recreational areas.

How popular is environmental health as a major?

Each year, around 360 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 20 students obtain an associate degree in environmental health. In 2021, 355 students received a bachelor's degree and 31 students received an associate degree. This is 3% more environmental health majors than there were in 2020. Environmental health is a relatively uncommon major within public health.
