What is a general education major?

The study of education concentrates on the general theory and practice of learning and teaching. But there's a lot more to it than just standing in front of a class. Education students must be trained in the basic principles of educational psychology, the art of teaching, the planning and administration of educational activities, school safety and health issues, and the social foundations of education. Subtopics include foundations of education, bilingual and multicultural education, Native American education, educational research, educational statistics and research methods, as well as education administration, among others.

The national average salary for general education graduates in the United States is $55,000 per year. Those in the top 10 percent make over $110,000 a year, while the bottom 10 percent make under $22,500 a year. While salary ranges can vary by role, industry, and location, general education graduates typically make between $40,000 and $80,000 per year.

How popular is general education as a major?

Each year, around 9,760 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 4,110 students obtain an associate degree in general education. In 2021, 11,119 students received a bachelor's degree and 4,333 students received an associate degree. This is 12% more general education majors than there were in 2020. General education is one of the most popular majors within education.
