What is a data science major?

Data science is a program that focuses on the analysis of large scale data sources from the interdisciplinary perspectives of applied statistics, computer science, data storage, data representation, data modeling, mathematics, and statistics. It includes instruction in computer algorithms, computer programming, data management, data mining, information policy, information retrieval, mathematical modeling, quantitative analysis, statistics, trend spotting, and visual analytics.

How popular is data science as a major?

Each year, around 120 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and fewer than 5 students obtain an associate degree in data science. In 2021, 165 students received a bachelor's degree and fewer than 5 students received an associate degree. This is 98% more data science majors than there were in 2020. Data science is a relatively popular major compared to other math majors.
