What is a data processing major?

Programs for data processing prepare students to master and use computer software programs and applications for inputting, verifying, organizing, storing, retrieving, transforming (changing, updating, and deleting), and extracting information. Course topics include using various operating system configurations and types of data entry such as word processing, spreadsheets, calculators, management programs, design programs, database programs, and research programs.

The national average salary for data processing graduates in the United States is $80,000 per year. Those in the top 10 percent make over $163,700 a year, while the bottom 10 percent make under $28,000 a year. While salary ranges can vary by role, industry, and location, data processing graduates typically make between $46,200 and $116,000 per year.

How popular is data processing as a major?

Each year, around 180 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 1,480 students obtain an associate degree in data processing. In 2021, 189 students received a bachelor's degree and 1,217 students received an associate degree. This is 15% fewer data processing majors than there were in 2020. Data processing is a relatively popular major compared to other trades and personal services majors.
