What is a computer programming major?

Computer programming focuses on the general writing and implementation of generic and customized programs to drive operating systems and that generally prepares individuals to apply the methods and procedures of software design and programming to software installation and maintenance. It includes instruction in software design, low- and high-level languages and program writing, program customization and linking, prototype testing, troubleshooting, and related aspects of operating systems and networks.

Those in the top 10 percent make over $163,700 a year, while the bottom 10 percent make under $28,000 a year. While salary ranges can vary by role, industry, and location, computer programming graduates typically make between $46,200 and $116,000 per year.

How popular is computer programming as a major?

Each year, around 1,700 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 3,660 students obtain an associate degree in computer programming. In 2021, 2,197 students received a bachelor's degree and 3,819 students received an associate degree. This is 11% more computer programming majors than there were in 2020.
