What is a commercial photography major?

Commercial photography students function in the applied visual arts and are prepared to use artistic techniques to effectively communicate ideas and information to business and consumer audiences, and recording events and people, via digital, film, still and video photography. Instruction includes specialized camera and equipment operation and maintenance, applications to commercial and industrial needs, and photography business operations.

How popular is commercial photography as a major?

Each year, around 260 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 560 students obtain an associate degree in commercial photography. In 2021, 146 students received a bachelor's degree and 338 students received an associate degree. This is 14% fewer commercial photography majors than there were in 2020. Commercial photography is a relatively uncommon major within film and photography.
