What is a ceramics major?

This program trains individuals creatively and technically to assert mental states and understandings by producing artworks out of clay and similar materials. Courses may concentrate on handbuilt and wheelthrown techniques, molding, slips and glazes, trimming and decorating, firing and kiln operation, oxidation, mixed media, ceramic murals, and personal style development.

How popular is ceramics as a major?

Each year, around 110 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 10 students obtain an associate degree in ceramics. In 2021, 72 students received a bachelor's degree and fewer than 5 students received an associate degree. This is 25% fewer ceramics majors than there were in 2020. Ceramics is a relatively uncommon major within art.
