Advice from general architecture majors
Share your experienceArchitecture is an extremely demanding major. There are very few exams that span smaller or elective architecture-related classes. It is often the Design Studio classes that catch people off guard. The architecture major requires students to spend 80%-90% of their time on creative thinking and hands-on project making. It requires students to think strategically, have an artistic background, understand multiple complicated computer modeling software, and be able to contribute a lot of their time to completing complex projects. That being said, architecture is still a very interesting major. As long as students maintain a positive mentality and focus more on enjoying the process, they will succeed in this major in a blink of an eye and with passion.
Time management is the key. Being able to balance working on a project with self-care and socializing is challenging but necessary. Maximize downtime throughout the day to get ahead on projects or prepare for presentations and work efficiently during the allotted hours in Studio class. If you do so, there is no need to spend hours past 5 pm in the studio. As much as I love architecture, I prioritize taking care of myself through eating a full meal, exercising, and spending time with friends in the evenings. Setting guidelines for yourself, such as when you will finish a stage in a project allows you to have control over the demanding schedule and explore everything campus has to offer. Syracuse is such a diverse, active environment, that no one should isolate themselves. Furthermore, your professor will not reward you for spending all night working on a project. Quality work done in a time-efficient manner is admired more than putting architecture before your well-being.
If you choose architecture, I'd like to say there is almost no going back. Most students go into architecture thinking it will be something completely different than what it really is, be sure you are prepared for that. Choosing architecture does not limit you to only becoming a registered architect, there are plenty of other career pathways you can go if you decide this major. Be ready to learn new software, time management, and most importantly your speaking skills. You are given so much freedom in architecture school to put your ideas out there, take advantage of it. You will most likely make great friends in the studio since you will spend almost 24/7 with them. If you only rely on motivation, you should probably reconsider. Waves can only get a boat so far, you need to put in the hard work and effort. Communicate with your professors, don't see them as clients, remember they are also your tutors. Wish you all students good luck.
