Students of African American studies learn the history, sociology, politics, culture, and economics of the North American peoples descended from the African diaspora. The focus is on the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, but also includes reference to Latin American elements of the diaspora.

Each year, around 970 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and fewer than 5 students obtain an associate degree in African American studies. In 2021, 1,057 students received a bachelor's degree and fewer than 5 students received an associate degree. This is relatively the same number of African American studies majors as there were in 2020. African American studies is a relatively uncommon major within interdisciplinary studies.
