Sophomore: Entering college, I was head-over-heels excited to attend my dream school: University of Michigan. What I did not realize were the many factors that came along with starting this new path of life -- living away from home, party culture, the football game frenzy, endless schoolwork, and the underlying pressure of having to make connections and network with others. Although these aspects seemed as though they were going to slowly but surely destroy me, I found great solace in studying (and the occasional bi-weekly matcha latte from Sweetwaters:)). The vast amount of resources in any field from ballet to biochemistry was something truly unique and a gift for someone interested in a multidisciplinary career like me. Further the research opportunities available to even first year students were abundant in every field. Junior: The University of Florida is a great school for online students. I am a student in the Fire and Emergency services program and have enjoyed my time here. Although I am an out of state student, the tuition rates for this school are more affordable than an in-state institution where I live in Tennessee. Also, the academics are sufficiently challenging. The professors that I've had have all been very helpful, welcoming calls or emails. There are a few programs noted for their fire science across the nation, such as Oklahoma State University but they are so much more costly. Another great aspect of being an online student at University of Florida is being treated like an on-campus student. You have access to all campus facilities, can purchase Florida Gators football student season tickets, etc. While many "colleges" that cater to fire and emergency services are basically degree mills and lack the reputation that the University of Florida offers. Sophomore: I really love the city of Austin! The "weirdness" of Austin jumps out at you in the best way. The countless times I've gone to the groovy thrift stores or south Congress Ave with friends have been some of the best moments of my young life. The culture at UT is one of a kind as well. I feel that every person attending college feels a certain amount of pride in their school, like its a part of their identity almost. With UT its that and then some. Being from Maryland, experiencing the lone star state has been otherworldly. The pride in Texans and in the school is like no other, and it has certainly rubbed of on me. Though I am only a sophomore I am a Longhorn though and through! On top of the great city, the larger than life students, the sports and the like, UT is an academic institution first. Classes can be tough, and you feel it. Having to juggle social life with the grueling curriculum is something I had to work very hard for and still haven't quite got the hang of yet.... Other: I attended UNC-CH from 1981-1985 and had the time of my life! From the general area to student life and the local area, I met life-long friends in the dorm, in class, in the spiritual and Christian campus fellowships, cultural groups, choirs, and even off-campus. The professors and department workers were accessible and easy to get along with. They were knowledgeable, caring and helpful. If I had to go back and choose again, I would definitely choose this same school. Up 'til my final year, I did not have summer school experience, so I chose to take a few summer school courses and stay on campus, just to see what it was like. Getting an A was even easier for me during the summer, and since the student population was smaller, we seemed even closer and got to know more people better. Sophomore: UC Berkeley is a prestigious institution that has a lot to offer in academics and extracurriculars. To me, the people are what make the experience so great, and fortunately, with such a large class, there is a myriad of people and groups to be affiliated with which illustrates the diversity at Berkeley. Some things can be frustrating sometimes such as applying for classes, finding resources, and having intrapersonal interactions with professors and classmates due to Berkeley being such a large institution. Additionally, there are other inconveniences such as the lack of housing for students which in my opinion, needs to start being a priority for the administration. Overall, UC Berkeley has a lot to offer and it is truly what you make of it. As someone who is heavily involved in varsity athletics, extracurriculars, leadership positions, and paraprofessional organizations, I am proud to call UC Berkeley home for me and I carry that with pride and class. Freshman: Athens, Georgia, the home of the University of Georgia, remains a fond memory in my heart. Athens is not too big of a city to get lost in, but not so small that it gets boring. There's always events taking place on campus, and Saturdays in Athens are some nobody should ever miss! The students here are willing to talk to you, and the campus makes it easy to bump into each other often. Amidst all these wonderful attributes that makes UGA so special--not to mention the great weather--I believe the housing situation needs to be updated. They are working on renovating certain dorms over the summer, so perhaps the housing situation may be better for the incoming class of 2024. The university also needs to address the parking situation because thousands of students are without a parking permit on the campus and have to park illegally due to lack of parking spaces. Sophomore: Upon arrival to UIUC, I immediately felt the sense that I was welcomed and appreciated for being there. The professors are spectacular! My organic chemistry professor contributed to the COVID test, which I thought was remarkable that he contributed to such a significant thing, yet, he was teaching ME! This, nonetheless, is not a unique experience as most of the professors at UIUC have done something remarkable, too. The student life at UIUC is unlike one I have ever imagined. The connections between people of various backgrounds, beliefs, etc are astounding. One thing I think I wish would change is the dorm housing. UIUC has one of the worst freshman dorm housing. For instance, I stayed in Snyder Hall in South Ikenberry Commons, and while it was nice, it was definitely not worth $13,000 (a year) for staying in a shoe box that would sometimes have cockroaches in the bathroom. Graduate Student: This was a great school to attend! There were so many traditions to participate in and the people that you met were so friendly. Academics were great too, the professors are easy to work with and they come with so much knowledge to pass on to their students. I was attending school when Covid occurred and instead of giving up, my program professors and the university adapted to the change and turned everything to online and still continued to teach great things. I was in the special education program, where our program thrives on live human interaction. Sophomore: Academically, this school's courses are satisfying and challenging. The professors are knowledgeable in their expertise and you can tell how passionate they are about their content. The food options are good, though I will say I wish we were given more Triton Cash. In terms of housing, it is frustrating that some first-year dorms are naturally better/modern, due to the year that they were built (like Muir), so I'm hoping to see future improvements in those dorms. Additionally, the party scene of this school is not the best, especially compared to its neighboring schools. Considering the school canceled Sun God this year, I can't say it was the best. Regardless, I would say I enjoyed this year, as the location and free public transport allows students to explore San Diego and take advantage of what it has to offer. Junior: The University of Central Florida provide students with a broad variety of programs of study, resources, and extra-curricular opportunities. Campus is huge and extremely lively. The school make it easy to get involved in extracurriculars; personally, being in the marching band has been an amazing experience that has allowed me to keep a healthy balance between my studies and my passion for music, not to mention the opportunity it has brought to meet new, wonderful people. Similarly, the many clubs on campus are an amazing way to begin building connections as a new student; in my case, as a Mechanical Engineering major, being involved in clubs gave me the valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience that is applicable to my major within my first semester in UCF. Purdue offers a wide range of classes, majors, and minors that allow me to be engulfed in all of the above! Junior: Overall, Pitt has been pretty good so far! Lots of ups and downs, but that's part of any college experience no matter the school. Academically, the school does a good job with professors and class load, but it depends on what you're studying. For engineers, the professors are not very good and the course load is insane. But for other subjects such as biology or chemistry, the professors tend to be a bit better. Student life is very vibrant at Pitt! For me it was a struggle at first, but by sophomore year I found my groove and flourished socially! Joining a student organization that suits your interests and finding people who care about you is something that really defined my perception at Pitt. There's something for everyone! Whether you like to party or stay in, no one's going to judge you! Pitt offers solid facilities such as the gym, track and field house, basketball courts (no tennis unfortunately), and there's plenty of places in the Oakland area to visit and chill!...
