Junior: I have been to multiple colleges before attending the Univesity of Alabama, including other universities as well as community colleges. I have never enjoyed my college experience as much as I did at the University of Alabama. The sports and my peers who attend the college are second to none, everyone is very friendly and the classes are great! The food in the dining hall is well above what I expected. Junior: Tulane University is such an incredible place for so many reasons. Because it is not said enough, the quality of professors here is absolutely unbelievable. The campus is beautiful, the students are happy, and the weather is perfect, minus the rain. The academics are rigorous but manageable, leaving time to get involved in extracurriculars, explore New Orleans, or anything else you want to do. New Orleans is an amazing and fun city with so much to see! The class sizes, at least for me personally, have been so small, and the relationships I have built with my professors are so special. The social climate can be a bit tough to manage for introverts or for those who do not enjoy going out often, but once you find your niche it is a non-issue. The academics are super flexible, and I'm able to graduate early despite choosing to study abroad! Sophomore: Upon arrival to UIUC, I immediately felt the sense that I was welcomed and appreciated for being there. The professors are spectacular! My organic chemistry professor contributed to the COVID test, which I thought was remarkable that he contributed to such a significant thing, yet, he was teaching ME! This, nonetheless, is not a unique experience as most of the professors at UIUC have done something remarkable, too. The student life at UIUC is unlike one I have ever imagined. The connections between people of various backgrounds, beliefs, etc are astounding. One thing I think I wish would change is the dorm housing. UIUC has one of the worst freshman dorm housing. For instance, I stayed in Snyder Hall in South Ikenberry Commons, and while it was nice, it was definitely not worth $13,000 (a year) for staying in a shoe box that would sometimes have cockroaches in the bathroom. Freshman: Athens, Georgia, the home of the University of Georgia, remains a fond memory in my heart. Athens is not too big of a city to get lost in, but not so small that it gets boring. There's always events taking place on campus, and Saturdays in Athens are some nobody should ever miss! The students here are willing to talk to you, and the campus makes it easy to bump into each other often. Amidst all these wonderful attributes that makes UGA so special--not to mention the great weather--I believe the housing situation needs to be updated. They are working on renovating certain dorms over the summer, so perhaps the housing situation may be better for the incoming class of 2024. The university also needs to address the parking situation because thousands of students are without a parking permit on the campus and have to park illegally due to lack of parking spaces. Alum: The highlight of my experience at UCSB was its student life! During my time as an undergraduate, I was very active on campus and involved myself in various clubs and organizations. I met many of my best friends through Kapatirang Pilipino, our Filipino cultural interest org. Alum: I entered FAMU as a transfer student in the fall of 2021 and graduated in the fall of 2023. I now work as a writing tutor at the university and am headed to grad school. As an English major, I had a wonderful time academically at the university but experienced the same hardships with financial aid that you would at any other institution. Overall, I could get what I needed when needed, even if it took a few extra steps. You will undoubtedly learn how to advocate for yourself as a student and as a person here, which is a good thing--it helped me overcome some anxiety. Junior: I adore everything about Ohio University! I was so excited to get to Athens my freshman year. I immediately fell in love with the campus and felt right at home there. From the very first day, the professors acknowledge that as new students, college will be demanding, but it is not impossible and is worth it. The professors truly care about their students and want to see them succeed, and they will do whatever they can to help. The student body is truly what makes OU so special. Senior: I love Howard University! But like many schools there are pros and there are cons. I'll start with the cons. Administration can be very unprofessional, and a lot of campus activities are run by students so they are very unorganized and/or don’t cater to how many students attend Howard. On that same note, housing is not guaranteed for upperclassmen because they accept so many freshmen each year. When you do get housing it is a hit-or-miss thing in terms of cleanliness, rodents, safety, etc. As far as the pros, the quality of education has been great for me personally. I feel like there is an even assortment of amazing, average, and horrible professors. However, if I had a more normal experience I would say prepare for the high rent, no good Bar B-Q or Mexican food, and watch out for crazy and fearless bicycles rider. Other: I am a parent of a current student and have another one who will attend in the fall. We could not be happier with our experience at UD! Our child is thriving academically, the classes are challenging him in ways he did not expect, but support is there if needed. The experiential learning opportunities, internships and study abroad programs are exceptional. Our son has enjoyed club and intramural sports, including tennis, volleyball and basketball. Family weekend is wonderful- so much to see and do, and it is an incredibly welcoming community. In fact, if you mention Dayton to just about anyone you will hear the word ‘community’ over and over, because it is true. Housing is unique- first year dorms are pretty typical, second year are either suites or on campus apartments, and third and fourth year students are eligible to live in the famous ‘neighborhood’, houses owned and maintained by the university.
