Alum: I loved my time at W&L. That school helped me grow into the person I am today. The small classes allowed me to have one-on-one time with my professors, many of whom I still speak with to this day. My friends and classmates continue to support me post grad, and the alumni network has been very accessible as I have applied to graduate programs. The school was very safe -- the only time we had a public safety announcement was when there was a bear on the outskirts of campus (living in the mountains has its perks and drawbacks). W&L is in a very very small town -- which I loved -- but may not be for everyone. I felt the academics were challenging but not impossible, and professors were accessible when I had questions. The school is not as diverse as other schools, and is more diverse than it gets credit for. There is a lot of geographic diversity -- very few students are from Virginia -- as well as wealth diversity. Most students are on some scholarship. I'd highly recommend W&L.... Read 475 reviews

Sophomore: Personally, I was afraid of coming to VT at first. I come from a very diverse city area, so going to a PWI in the middle of no where was very scary for me. Overall, I learned that VT is way more diverse than I expected and everyone is very nice. There is always something to do on campus and when discussing with my friends, we do actually have way better food than most universities and colleges. The academics, especially the math department can be frustrating and hard, but I think this is a given for any type of higher education. Being at VT has honestly been my best experience of education so far, and I've met some friends along the way who I believe are life long. Freshman: I am actually transferring from the Virginia Military Institute to the University of Virginia. Next year will be my first year at UVA and I am very excited because I hear UVA has amazing academics. My academic experience at VMI was challenging. If you haven't heard of VMI, it is a military college located in Lexington, Virginia. The first seven months at VMI, you go through something called the "rat line". During this seven-month period, you are pushed to the limits both mentally and physically. Personally, the real challenge wasn't the exhausting workouts or being yelled at for hours on end. It was actually balancing my academics that really challenged me. For example, I remember having to be up every morning between 5:00am-6:00am for mandatory workouts or formations and then having to take a huge test or go to a full day of classes right after. Alum: I had a great experience at JMU. I was a kinesiology major and all the professors were amazing! definitely felt cared for by my professors and they were always willing to take the time to answer my many questions. As for general education professors, they could be hit or miss, but overall very attentive to the student's education. I was never into the party scene, but that is big here with greek and non-greek life. There is always a party going on, if you are into that, and other campus events on the weekends or club events. Sports are getting bigger here since we have entered the Sunbelt league. Once you find the right community, this place will feel like home. Whether that is a club you join, academic peers, or an outside community, there is something for everyone. I started at JMU the year before COVID hit, so I was all in-person and then all online. Sophomore: The University of Mary Washington is situated in Downtown Fredericksburg. As far as to-do's outside of the university itself, there's not ,much for the under 21 student besides community festivals and farmers market. Downtown FXBG is a quiet place to hang out with peers and focus on your studies. There are plenty of outdoor activities to do such as the Rapahanock and various hiking trails in the area. Plenty of restaurants as well and in proximity to the downtown train station for travel! Academics at UMW are spectacular! Senior: I have nothing but good things to say about this school! The thing that really stands out about CNU is the campus community. Everyone is so friendly, always waving and smiling at each other. The campus is absolutely immaculate at all times (you will never find a piece of trash on the ground). The buildings themselves give an old school vibe, but are nice and modern on the insides, which I really appreciate. Professors here at CNU are one of a kind; they really try to get to know you on an individual level, making you feel more of a person rather than a number. The residence halls are so nice, and the fact that there aren't any hall baths was such a plus. Safety is never an issue, as the CNU police department is always patrolling on all parts of the campus. Sophomore: Longwood is a great place for students who want a smaller campus and smaller classes! I love the scenery on campus and where its located. There aren't many big shopping areas around unless you would like to take a day trip to Richmond. The community in Longwood is great; I see a lot of familiar faces daily and its not too overwhelming, especially for the freshman. The classes are engaging and small, which helps some introverted or anxious people. Athletics are a big thing at Longwood. The athletes are given electric scooters to ride to classes....
