Alum: I chose to attend Swarthmore College because they had the best financial aid package which made higher education for a first-gen, low-income student like myself possible. Besides the financial aid, I really enjoyed the small campus community where I developed relationships with my closest friends today as well as met my partner in life. It was at Swarthmore where I realized my dream of becoming a teacher practitioner and scholar which is what I am pursuing post-grad. I am indebted to my professors who were dedicated to scholarship that was aimed at improving educational and livelihood outcomes both on and outside of Swarthmore's campus. I would highly recommend taking classes in the sociology/ anthropology and educational studies department. Freshman: I absolutely love Villanova, I was very skeptical because it was a mid size university and I wasn’t sure about the area. However, very quickly I became attached to this university! Villanova has opened my eyes to so much in terms of new amazing friends, great athletics, demanding but rewarding academics, plenty of campus/organization sponsored events/activities through the year, vast networking opportunities, numerous research/internship programs, hundreds of clubs and organizations for everyone!! Villanova’s beliefs, traditions, and values are a huge part of the reason I love it here! The people here are loving, accepting, understanding and supportive! I’ve met the most amazing people (of course there’s always outliers) at Villanova and lifelong friends for sure! Junior: My experience at Haverford College has been wonderful. The Honor Code definitely plays a huge role with this. I have always felt safe walking at night on campus and am able to leave my belongings without fear it of it being taken. I feel as though I can approach my professors when I need support or accommodations and have never been turned down. It's clear that most people here respect others, faculty and the space around them (of course exceptions exist like anywhere else but are a small minority). Generally, I would say, the student population is happy, motivated, and eager to help others. Unlike Swarthmore or other selective colleges, students are collaborative, laid back, yet still strive to maintain academic excellence. Rather than only focusing on grades, Haverford students are eager to learn and contribute to the community. Sophomore: This university is perfect for students who want to be close to major cities but not directly inside them. The people are all nice and willing to help, staff and faculty included. There are a lot of opportunities for undergrads that I haven't seen in many other colleges, especially regarding research. And it is also a great place for international students, as there is a great network of support. The food is generally not bad at all, and there are many options throughout campus. Junior: Overall, Pitt has been pretty good so far! Lots of ups and downs, but that's part of any college experience no matter the school. Academically, the school does a good job with professors and class load, but it depends on what you're studying. For engineers, the professors are not very good and the course load is insane. But for other subjects such as biology or chemistry, the professors tend to be a bit better. Student life is very vibrant at Pitt! For me it was a struggle at first, but by sophomore year I found my groove and flourished socially! Joining a student organization that suits your interests and finding people who care about you is something that really defined my perception at Pitt. There's something for everyone! Whether you like to party or stay in, no one's going to judge you! Pitt offers solid facilities such as the gym, track and field house, basketball courts (no tennis unfortunately), and there's plenty of places in the Oakland area to visit and chill!... There are also four sections of Greek life, the Interfraternity, Multicultural Greek, National Pan-Hellenic, and Panhellenic Councils, that students can engage in. For athleticism and exercise, Penn State offers varsity, junior-varsity, and intramural sports of many different types; all students also have access to the three gyms on campus. There are a lot of clubs, organizations and sports, including Greek life, but if you’re looking for a party school, this is not it. Downtown Gettysburg is full of restaurants and shops and is a short walk away. Neighboring towns offer a larger selection of chain restaurants, malls and are a 20-30 drive away. All students, including freshman, can have cars on campus. Classes are challenging, but professors and upper level students/tutors are always available for extra help. Professors, coaches, and administrators are very approachable and want to get to know you, so they can help you succeed. Servo (dining hall) offers high-quality food and various selections. Junior: Muhlenberg College is a small but lovely undergraduate liberal arts college. The campus itself is a bit small, but that has always been a positive to me because I like the personable nature of the school. Also, everything is within walking distance, which makes commute to class/events pretty easy. The dining hall is ranked number one in PA, and very highly nationally as well, so the food is one of the major positives of the campus. In terms academics, Muhlenberg has a very strong theater program, though they are well staffed in other fields as well, providing a plethora of different majors and minors to students. The professors are great and work really hard to foster an inclusive environment. They are always happy to meet with you outside of class, and the small class sizes allow you to build more personal relationships with peers and instructors, which is ultimately one of my favorite aspects of the school. Freshman: My child is a freshman and absolutely loves F&M! I think the rating here overall is so off base. Should be A+. The campus is lovely. And it’s walking distance to lots of cute cafes and restaurants. Lovely small city of 65k surrounded by gorgeous farmland. The campus itself is beautiful and tree lined. The dorms freshman year are ok. College owns all “off campus” housing too and I have heard that is better for upper class-man. Classes so far have been rigorous but interesting. Loves the professors and advisor. The student support center is excellent. My child is also a musician and helping to make more of a music scene on campus. The music department is fantastic as are the facilities. My child is extremely involved in many extracurricular so super busy and happy. Joined Greek life but lots of friends outside it too. Freshman: Marywood university had an exceptional campus. I’d never been to such a pretty school building in my life. The freshman building is just okay, but the upperclassmen buildings are really nice and just like real apartment spaces. I will say the school is VERY VERY educationally rigorous and challenging. I am an out of state and untraditional high school graduate, so perhaps this was just me. If you haven’t had a traditional public school education the core classes may be difficult for you. The cafeteria is amazing. They have at least 6 different entree options at every meal. They have three soda machines, and ice cream machine, and a dessert bar. They also have a mini Starbucks on campus that you can use your meal plan at, and they have a small store that sells chips and other snacks. The nature surrounding Marywood is beautiful and there are opportunities to see animals around campus. This is a gorgeous but challenging school. There is support for those who are struggling too.... Sophomore: I absolutely love this college! Not only is the campus beautiful from all of the flowers but it’s also very welcoming! The staff are friendly and help with any questions or issues. Even the dorms are clean with lots of potential! I always had full access to A/C and heat which made living here comfortable. Also Slippery Rock had just adjusted the internet all over campus to be more accessible for students. Another part of the campus that I enjoy is the wide range of activities. Slippery rock has their own app called Corq, that shows all the times and activities that are happening on campus. This makes weekends never boring and It helps with staying active. A favorite of mine is the wide variety of food options here on campus. A common issue for most colleges is food boredom but with Slippery Rock I haven’t had that problem! Sophomore: Saint Francis is truly an amazing college. The professors here are very smart and also extremely kind. They want their students to exceed and they want to get to know them better. There are also a plethora of opportunities here. I was involved in a research project during the spring semester of my freshman year, which is incredible. That would not be the case at a large university. The environment here is also really nice. When you see people you know, you always smile and chat for a few minutes, both with students and professors. I actually enjoy the secluded area with the nature trails, and bigger towns are only 15-25 minutes away which is nice.
