Senior: Overall, Macalester offers a great liberal arts education. Most notably, the quality of teaching stood out the most for me because (most) professors sought out unique methods of assessment that I felt enhanced my ability to learn and engage with material. Second, the student culture here is really down to Earth. There is wealth here but I feel like it was not overwhelming to adjust to as a low income minority. The school is kind of diverse but the black student population is very very small. Party scene is okay until the winter, then it’s bad (more small intimate stuff). Tons of students get research opportunities through the school and/or neighboring UMN so don’t let research access be a turn off. Food is terrible. Study abroad opportunities are definitely a stand out!! The school also is great at giving resources to students, they really do care. It’s not perfect but I’m glad I went.... Read 479 reviews

Freshman: The community at Carleton is amazing, and I already have a very close group of friends that I find myself going everywhere and doing everything with after just one term. I can't think of any friends from high school at other universities that have found their community so accepting and settled in so quickly. The only gripe I truly have with Carleton is the dining hall hours, but it's a rite of passage to complain about those here. I was surprised to learn more about the social scene; weekends are far more lively than I expected, and this was definitely something I appreciated. Profs are personable, and I feel as though I could approach any of them during office hours if I was struggling or even just to have a conversation about interesting course material. The school's resources are well-equipped to help students deal with the sometimes strenuous courseload of an intellectual school. Sophomore: My experience at St. Olaf College has been enjoyable thus far. The community is the school's biggest "it" factor; there is something exceptional about Oles. I felt immediately welcomed on campus and learned quickly that there is a group for every person. The camaraderie between the different sports teams (MIAC and club) is unique and precious. There is a balance on the campus that is unique as well; every Ole is well-rounded, and there isn't an over-emphasis on athletics versus academics versus arts. Every area of study or interest is encouraged and fostered on campus. I would like to see a change in the housing process; housing was quite messy the past semester for all of the current students, and it was a stressful endeavor for everyone. I'd like to see more off-campus housing available for upperclassmen, or more options for those living on campus. Sophomore: I enjoy how most of the professors are super nice, welcoming, and supportive. I had trouble with a class, and my advisor told me she also had trouble with the class. I found this helpful as she now has a doctorate, and didn’t let that one class stop her. I don’t enjoy how one specific teacher was able to not have class for a month but still expected us to know everything. I use class to learn, and my free time for homework. I am not able to thrive well in class if I am the one teaching myself. She was hard to get in to contact with during the month, so you either struggled or had to have someone else teach it to you. Sophomore: Overall my experience at the University of St. Thomas has been great! My favorite part about the school is the class size. Being at a smaller school allows for students to get more attention and help from their professors, and I feel that I've started to build strong connections with my prfoessors. Campus life is pretty fun as well! UST hosts a lot of different events every week, so there's always something to do around campus. Somethings I'd like to see change is probably some changes to their dining and to offer more choices. I'd definitely say that the dining options are pretty much the same every week and sometimes they have these themed dinner nights leaving people with no options for things that aren't within the theme. Freshman: I have enjoyed my experience at Concordia College. Nearby coffee shops and the gorgeous campus make studying much more enjoyable. Most of my issues have not been with the college itself, but have been with outside factors. Overall Concordia has done an admirable job of accommodating students who need it. The start-of-school rush does create some backup and difficulties with reaching the on-campus counseling services, but as the year progressed this became less of an issue. The disabilities office is good at what they do and works hard to ensure students' needs are met to the best of their abilities, even if that means going head-to-head with professors (an uncommon occurrence, but not unheard of). I would like for there to be better ways to contact professors in case of mental or physical illness that professors are required to honor rather than leaving it up to students to communicate and convince of a legitimate issue.... Alum: I went to Minnesota State University, Mankato and received my undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in Law Enforcement. My experience at this school was really great. I met lifelong friends, traveled to Ireland for a study abroad, took a wide variety of courses and graduated a semester early. I loved the location of the school, it was on the smaller side but that was what appealed to me the most. The campus was always clean and felt safe. There were always activies or events going on around town/campus. Everyone here is studying to be a pastor, teacher, or staff minister, and that bonds the entire campus in such an amazing way.
