Alum: I chose to attend Swarthmore College because they had the best financial aid package which made higher education for a first-gen, low-income student like myself possible. Besides the financial aid, I really enjoyed the small campus community where I developed relationships with my closest friends today as well as met my partner in life. It was at Swarthmore where I realized my dream of becoming a teacher practitioner and scholar which is what I am pursuing post-grad. I am indebted to my professors who were dedicated to scholarship that was aimed at improving educational and livelihood outcomes both on and outside of Swarthmore's campus. I would highly recommend taking classes in the sociology/ anthropology and educational studies department. Freshman: I absolutely love Villanova, I was very skeptical because it was a mid size university and I wasn’t sure about the area. However, very quickly I became attached to this university! Villanova has opened my eyes to so much in terms of new amazing friends, great athletics, demanding but rewarding academics, plenty of campus/organization sponsored events/activities through the year, vast networking opportunities, numerous research/internship programs, hundreds of clubs and organizations for everyone!! Junior: My experience at Haverford College has been wonderful. The Honor Code definitely plays a huge role with this. I have always felt safe walking at night on campus and am able to leave my belongings without fear it of it being taken. I feel as though I can approach my professors when I need support or accommodations and have never been turned down. It's clear that most people here respect others, faculty and the space around them (of course exceptions exist like anywhere else but are a small minority). Generally, I would say, the student population is happy, motivated, and eager to help others. Unlike Swarthmore or other selective colleges, students are collaborative, laid back, yet still strive to maintain academic excellence. Rather than only focusing on grades, Haverford students are eager to learn and contribute to the community. Alum: University of Delaware offers a lot of great opportunities academically. The courses and professors prepare you well for your your career or graduate/professional journey post undergrad. However, the experience you get is the experience you create. "You get what you put in". While the opportunities are there, it takes a lot of independence and self-determination to take advantage of these opportunities. I think UD could do a lot better in terms of advising within each college/school as well as for minority students. I would recommend better academic advisement (from personal experience). Being a large university, it is very easy for students to get "lost" if you don't continuously reach out and stay connected with advisors and mentors for guidance. Newark, DE is generally a very safe community. There is a large policy and campus police presence. Sophomore: My experience so far has been great, and the campus is safe for the most part. What I like about the campus is that it is diverse and inclusive. There are some nice people and the campus is easy to navigate because it is so small. I Like how the teachers are very helpful and willing to help. The campus has a food pantry that the students can shop from to decrease food insecurity. They have all sorts of clubs to make everyone feel welcome. They recognize student's achievements and make sure that it doesn't go unnoticed. What I would like to see changed is the dining hall food. It could be way better and more seasoned. I would like them to have different milk options for those who are lactose intolerant. Although they have almond milk it doesn't taste very nice with cereal. I would like them to have more options and the food to be fresh. I would also want to say there is a lack of eating restaurants on campus. Graduate Student: Rowan university was overall a pretty good experience for me. The tour I took in my Junior year of high school made the decision a lot easier since my Admissions Ambassador was great, very welcoming and engaging, and pretty knowledgeable. Above all, she was authentic and I enjoyed being able to see an actual student's experience with the college. Parking is atrocious, and the administration can do better with instruction and information spreading, but the overall experience wasn't bad. I had mostly good professors that I knew I could reach out to if I was struggling. Sure, there are one or two that I never want to interact with again, but there are so many more that I would love to talk to and have a class with again! Professor Tim Donaldson is probably my favorite teacher, though Professor Ron Block and Professor Megan Atwood are close seconds! The class sizes are smaller, so you get one-to-one attention and support from your professors, which helps you thrive. You are a person here, not a number. Sophomore: Completing my second year I can say things are moving quick! New dining center and food provider (all fresh food never frozen), new tech like an Amazon store, updates to lounges and more. Oh and as a business major our new Bloomberg Terminal lab is the bomb! Yes it’s a quiet town but that’s ok. Amazing profs and great friends. And the career prep is on point. Freshman: College is exactly what you make of it. Surrounded my great friends and professors who want have the best intention for you is the best thing. Food is better freshly done, great scenery on campus. Library and computer lab great for getting out of your dorm! Walmart nearby , and other fast food chain restaurants 25 mins away.
