My experience so far at Rutgers has been pretty good overall, but I have experienced a few bumps. I love the wide range of academic courses and the many research opportunities that allowed me to pursue my passions. Socializing was made easy by the welcoming community and active campus life. However, managing administrative tasks can be time-consuming and a big class can sometimes feel cold. Parking is a pain! Rutgers's bus system is sometimes a hassle. On-campus housing quality is unpredictable. Despite these challenges, I've had a useful and enjoyable time at the university thanks to its modern facilities, convenient location, and sometimes useful transportation system. Improvements in administration, housing, class sizes, dining, and the bus system would enhance the experience further.
Overall, I believe Rutgers does offer a great education, but this depends significantly on which major you decide to pursue. Throughout my 4 years, I have certainly had a number of excellent professors within the Psychology program, and I believe that the courses I have taken specifically in that field have been extremely insightful and beneficial to my post-graduate career. Still I can't say that my personal experience has been absolutely amazing though, mostly because of safety concerns relating to College Ave. During the day you should be absolutely fine, but I've noticed an uptick in security alerts throughout the past 2 or so years. Otherwise, the issues I've seen aren't really unique to Rutgers, but there have definitely been professors of mine outside of the Psychology program who really didn't teach that well (mostly in lower-level elective courses). Also, as much as I loved the scenery in Cook-Doug, that seems to be where a bunch of annoying Freshmen are put for some reason.
Rutgers University - New Brunswick is a large and expansive campus that can be overwhelming, especially for commuter students. The sheer size of the university and its extensive bus system, while necessary, often lead to long waits, crowded rides, and additional stress. Many of my classes lacked significant Latino representation, and it was challenging to have a strong sense of belonging. Academically, the university offers diverse programs and resources, but with such a large student population, it's easy to feel like just another number. Commuters, in particular, struggle with balancing academics and travel, often missing out on the full college experience and organic interactions that on-campus students enjoy. Despite these challenges, Rutgers provides a wide range of opportunities, but it requires careful planning and resilience to navigate effectively.
