Upstate NY July 4 forecast: The heat and humidity return for an extended stay

Syracuse, N.Y. – After a week of dry days in the 70s, summer heat and humidity return today to Upstate New York.

Temperatures will soar into the upper 80s starting this afternoon and continue every day through the weekend and into early next week, the National Weather Service predicts.

“It will remain very warm and humid for the Fourth of July holiday,” the weather service said.

A cold front -- relatively speaking -- will filter through on Independence Day, bringing the chance of morning showers and afternoon thunderstorms. The high is expected to be 87 degrees in Syracuse.

The rest of the four-day weekend will remain hot, with daytime highs in the high 80s and nighttime temperatures staying in the upper 60s or low 70s. Chances of rain and thunderstorms increase on Saturday to about 50%.

High temperatures are expected to be 5 to 8 degrees above normal, which is about 81 degrees in Syracuse in early July.

The first half of July is predicted to remain above normal in most of the country, including Upstate New York. Meteorologists say this could be one of the warmest summers on record.

So far, 2024 has been the warmest year on record in Syracuse.
