Syracuse, N.Y. -- Temperatures here are expected to top out at 95 degrees today, but will feel more like 104 as a three-day heat wave continues to hover over much of Upstate New York, according to the National Weather Service.
The forecast for Juneteenth also includes the possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially after 11 a.m. in Central New York, according to the weather service.
Overall, the chance of rain today is 40%, with rainfall accumulations at less than a tenth of an inch. Higher amounts could fall where storms hit, according to the weather service.
A heat advisory remains in effect for the region through 8 p.m. Thursday. Humidity levels overnight could reach near 80%, and the nighttime temp will linger in the mid-70s.
Thursday’s weather could prove even harder to endure. Temperatures in Syracuse are predicted to feel like 105 degrees, and the severity of thunderstorms could worsen, according to the weather service.
Damaging winds and heavy rains are the main concerns, the service said.
Today in the Syracuse area, it will ironically feel hotter the further north you go, with one exception: In the Ithaca area, it could feel like 106 degrees.
It’s possible we’ll break a high temperature record today. The record high for June 19 in Syracuse is 95 degrees, set in 1995. The normal high is 78.
Several community sites have opened as cooling centers, but as today is a federal holiday, it’s good to call first.

The weather service advises the following during a heat advisory:
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Stay in an air-conditioned room
- Stay out of the sun
- Check up on relatives and neighbors
- Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances
