Roadside motels, a staple of mid-century American travel, are experiencing a nostalgic revival and one meticulously renovated motor lodge in Upstate New York has been named a standout in the country.
The Starlite Motel at the foot of the Catskill Mountains ranked number 8 on USA Today’s list of the 10 best roadside motels in the United States. As travelers seek unique and memorable experiences, all of the vintage lodgings on this list offer a charming escape from the cookie-cutter chain hotels.
The publication notes that the exterior retains a lot of the original features typical of roadside motels, but the interiors of each room have had a full renovation with modern comforts.
Amenities include a pool to use during warm weather, outdoor areas, a fire pit, hammocks, the Starlite Canteen with snacks and drinks. There are also pop-up cocktail events at the motel.
What you won’t find however are television sets, so you can fully immerse yourself in your surroundings.
The Starlite Motel, located in the sleepy town of Kerhonkson, has been a Borscht Belt staple for travelers since the 1960s. During a time when other resorts and hotels discriminated Jewish patrons, the Borscht Belt served as their vacation destination for sunbathing, dancing, and dining.
According to Chronogram, the hotel was purchased in 2018 by its current owners who gave this beloved motel a new life.
It is located around 15 minutes from Minnewaska State Park Preserve and award-winning Kelder Farms and just a short drive away from the majestic Mohonk Mountain House and the Shawangunk Ridge.
