Woman killed after tree falls on camper during severe storm in Upstate NY

A 45-year-old woman inside a camper at a campground in Upstate New York was killed by tree that fell during a powerful storm on Saturday, officials said.

Carol E. Luistro was pinned under the tree at the Russell Brook Campsites in Colchester at about 10:50 a.m., police in the Delaware County town said. Luistro, of Edison, New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene.

At least one other person suffered a head injury and others were left with minor injuries, officials said.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton, New York, said the area was hit by a “severe microburst” with “very damaging straight-line winds” of up to 90 mph on Saturday morning.

Many recreational vehicles and camper units, several tents, and at least two vehicles were heavily damaged or destroyed by falling trees, the weather service said.

Winds intensified suddenly and lasted for more than five minutes with many trees being knocked down, according to the weather service.

The microburst was 1.8 miles long and eight-tenths of a mile wide at its peak.

The campground is off Route 17 in the western Catskills, about 55 miles east of Binghamton and three hours from Edison.
