Victim in Finger Lakes Tops shooting identified; still in critical condition in Syracuse

Seneca Falls, N.Y. — A man who was shot Sunday after an argument outside a Finger Lakes Top’s grocery store has been identified.

The victim is Antonio Caban Ortiz, 47, of Geneva, according to Seneca Falls police.

Ortiz, who was shot in the face, is in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. He was airlifted to the hospital by Mercy Flight after the shooting, which happened just before 3 p.m. at the Tops store near Route 5 and Route 20 in Seneca Falls.

On Sunday, police arrested Jose A. Garcia-Vellen, 35, of Waterloo. He is charged with first-degree assault, police said. He is currently being held at the Seneca County Correctional Facility.

Seneca Falls Police Chief Tim Snyder told the Finger Lakes Times today that Ortiz and Garcia-Vellen knew each other.
