The Buffalo Bills officially signed Gable Steveson to a three-year deal on Friday. The move comes just a few weeks after the 24-year-old worked out with the Bills.

Steveson is a highly decorated athlete, but lacks football experience. Who is Steveson and what do fans need to know about him? Here are six things to know.

Impressive high school and college records

Steveson doesn’t have a football background, but the Bills are counting on his dominance in wrestling to transfer over to the football field.

Steveson held a prep record of 210-3 in high school and went 85-2 at the University of Minnesota on his way to two NCAA Championships. After dominating at the high school and college levels, Steveson turned his attention to the Olympics.

Former Olympic gold medalist

Steveson’s success continued in the Olympics. In the 2020 Summer Olympics, Steveson won the gold medal last defeating Geno Petriashvili of Georgia. The victory came in the final seconds with Steveson earning two points in the final second to ultimately win 9-8.

Named after Dan Gable

Steveson’s path to wrestling should come as no surprise. His parents named him after Dan Gable, a former Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA champion.

Most recently with the WWE

Steveson attempted to move from Olympic wrestling to professional wrestling. Steveson joined World Wrestling Entertainment in 2021.

Steveson’s pro wrestling career did not pan out. He had one televised match against Baron Corbin, a former NFL practice squad player with the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals. Steveson’s last match in the WWE came in the beginning of 2024 in a dark match, but he was released by the WWE shortly thereafter.

Will give defensive tackle a try

The Bills listed Steveson as a defensive tackle. Although the team has Steveson listed at 5-feet-11-inches and 266 pounds, the former wrestler currently weighs in at 275 pounds. Steveson will probably have to gain another 10-20 pounds in his attempt to play defensive tackle.

Bills had previously interest in Steveson

Buffalo’s interest in Steveson should not come as a surprise. The team reached out to Steveson in 2021 about trying out before he chose to join the WWE.
