‘Isn’t It Too Pretty?’ – A Jewell House Art Event and Conversation Featuring Fanyu Lin

Please join us at the Jewell House to celebrate the exhibition “Home”: Breathe in—Breathe out— curated by Lina Takeuchi, showcasing Fanyu Lin’s recent paintings.

The evening will feature a conversation with the artist Fanyu Lin, alongside Richard Vine, esteemed art critic and former Managing Editor of Art in America magazine, and Fei Bo, entrepreneur, investor and Executive Director of the Asian Family Legacy Foundation.

*Isn’t It Too Pretty?*

Can a picture be too pleasing? Why is pure visual pleasure so often regarded as suspect by the advocates of serious art? These are some of the questions raised by the abstract paintings of Fanyu Lin, an emerging artist who presents her flowing gestural compositions as part of a holistic way-of-being. Equal parts therapeutic artist, writer, architect, Lin melds the ancient Chinese notion of the artist as sage with the historic Western model of the artist as engaged community member—thereby creating her own surprisingly up-to-date aesthetic. Is her work “merely decorative,” as skeptics in the Modernist and Postmodernist vein might contend? Or does her art offer a richly conflicted but ultimately reassuring response to contemporary issues, both social and individual? These questions and more will be addressed by Lin in her public conversation with art critic Richard Vine and entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist Fei Bo.

Fanyu Lin is an artist and entrepreneur, working at the intersection of fine arts, technology, architecture and design. Since her formative years learning calligraphy, under the guidance of her grandfather, Lin has been deeply influenced by the unity of perception and expression, celebrating not just the beauty of forms, but the dynamic strokes that bring them to life. She experienced art’s innate power to heal, guide, and transform. An active voice in global dialogues, Lin serves on the Bloomberg New Economy Cities Council to collaborate on a methodical, citizen-centric approach to urbanization, and on the World Economic Forum’s Council on the Connected World, to shape governance and innovation of the internet of things and related technologies in the global public interest. As a contributing writer for the Financial Times (Chinese), she writes biweekly articles with audio on global leadership, ESG, art, and business. Lin is also the Chair of the Art & International Committee for the Columbia Business School Alumni Club of New York. She graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts and Columbia University.

Richard Vine was the managing editor of Art in America magazine for over three decades. He holds a PhD in literature from the University of Chicago and previously served as editor-in-chief of the Chicago Review and of Dialogue: An Art Journal. He has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the American Conservatory of Music, the University of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, the New School for Social Research, and New York University. Some three hundred of his articles, reviews, and interviews have appeared in various journals, including Art in America, Salmagundi, the Georgia Review, Tema Celeste, Modern Poetry Studies, and the New Criterion. Vine has made presentations at over 125 universities, museums, and other cultural venues in cities throughout the U.S. and abroad, in such locales as Venice, Shanghai, Buenos Aires, and St. Petersburg. Among his critical books are Odd Nerdrum: Paintings, Sketches, and Drawings (2001) and New China, New Art (2008), which traces the emergence of avant-garde art in post-Mao China. In 2016, Vine published the crime novel SoHo Sins, set in the New York art world of the 1990s. In addition, he has co-curated exhibitions at the National Art Museum of China, Beijing (2013); the National Academy of Art in New Delhi, India (2015); the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York (2016); and Bienvenu Steinberg and J gallery, New York (2023). He is a member of the International Association of Art Critics and Mensa.

Fei Bo is the Executive Director of the Asian Family Legacy Foundation, where she champions the mission to convene the world’s most influential families and to support their capital and non-capital legacy building. With a focus on fostering exclusive, invite-only gatherings, educational initiatives, and philanthropic endeavors, she drives the foundation’s goal of bringing capital for social good. Fei is also the Founder and CEO of LHLovingLife, a premium media and education platform dedicated to empowering individuals to reach life’s full potential especially in professional setting through curated content, mentorship, and hands-on projects, in collaboration with leading institutions across finance, consulting, tech, investment and the entrepreneurship. In addition, LHLovingLife connects cross-border investment opportunities among the Middle East, China, and the U.S., offering capital raising and advisory services. Fei’s career is marked by diverse experiences spanning the private and public sectors, including her time at Bloomberg, where she launched the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in 2018, the most influential CEO gatherings in Asia, as well as her tenure at The Boston Consulting Group, where she consulted for Fortune 500 companies across various sectors. Fei holds a Master of Public Administration in International Economics and Finance Policy from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. She was a competitive ballroom dancer for over a decade, winning first place at Blackpool on behalf of Cambridge University in the U.K. and placing first place in gold level championship at intercollegiate competition at Columbia University in New York. She is a certified 200-hour yoga instructor. She is a writer with publications on Bloomberg Opinion and Thrive Global, and thought leadership on business, tech, finance, investment and life. She currently lives in New York with her husband and two kids.
