When Will 'Fruits Basket: Prelude' Be Released in Theaters?

The prequel to hit anime Fruits Basket is set to be released in theaters across the United States and Canada thanks to Crunchyroll.

Titled Fruits Basket -prelude-, the movie follows the story of protagonist Tohru Honda's mother, Kyoko, and charts how she met and fell in love with her future husband, Katsuya.

When Will 'Fruits Basket: Prelude' Be Released in Theaters?

Fruits Basket -prelude- will be released in theaters across the U.S. and Canada in select movie theaters on June 25, 28 and 29.

The movie will be available to watch both in Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed into English by a whole cast.

Tickets for the film are already available to purchase from Fandango for screenings in both countries.

Fruits Basket -prelude- will also be released by Crunchyroll in the United Kingdom for one day only on July 20, and only the dubbed version of the film will come out in British theaters.

What Will 'Fruits Basket: Prelude' Be About?

As previously mentioned, Fruits Basket -prelude- is a prequel to the 2019 anime remake of Fruits Basket, and it follows the relationship between Kyoko and Katsuya Honda before their tragic deaths.

The two characters are parents to Tohru Honda, who is the protagonist of the anime series. In the show, Tohru comes to live with the Soma family after the sudden passing of her mother.

Tohru discovers that the family has a secret: 12 of them are members of the Chinese Zodiac, who turn into their respective animal when they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex.

The Soma family are marred by the curse and the hold that family leader Akito holds over them, though, while Zodiac member Kyo struggles with being ostracized as the reincarnation of the Cat.

Fruits Basket had three seasons, which adapted Natsuki Takaya's iconic manga of the same name, and they are available to watch on Crunchyroll in full.

The TV show is the second to adapt the manga as there was also an original 2001 anime adaptation that consisted of 26 episodes.

Fruits Basket -prelude- is written by Taku Kishimoto, who also worked on the 2019 series, Haikyu!!, and Erased.

Who Will Star in the Voice Cast for 'Fruits Basket: Prelude'?

Fruits Basket -prelude- will bring back several members of the 2019 anime's original cast, both from the Japanese and English-language version.

Laura Bailey will reprise her role as Tohru, while Jerry Jewell will also return as Kyo in the dubbed version of the film. Lydia Mackay and J. Michael Tatum are also back as Kyoko and Katsuya, respectively.

Japanese voice actors Miyuki Sawashiro and Yoshimasa Hosoya return to voice Kyoko and Katsuya in the film, after first playing the characters in minor roles in the anime series.

Manaka Iwami and Yūma Uchida are also set to return for the subbed version of the film to voice Tohru and Kyo, respectively.
