'Upload' Season 2 Ending Explained: Greg Daniels on Those Shocking Twists

Upload Season 2 has some shocking twists in store for fans, even more surprising than the ones featured in the Season 1 finale.

The new season, which premiered on Prime Video on Friday, March 11, introduces a whole range of new possibilities both for living people like Nora Anthony (Andy Allo) and the deceased whose consciousness has been uploaded to virtual world Lake View, like Nathan Brown (Robbie Amell).

And Newsweek spoke to showrunner Greg Daniels about the most surprising moments to come out of the finale.

'Upload' Season 2 Ending Explained

Season 2 of Upload introduces the possibility of reincarnation, the possibility that those who had transferred their consciousness into virtual worlds like Lake View could return back to their real-life bodies.

The new episodes reveal that the richest of clients at Lake View have been paying for their bodies to be regrown and stored in a high-security facility, ready for when the science evolves enough for them to successfully "download" into their bodies without dying.

At first it doesn't seem like this will be possible any time soon after one client downloads on live television only for his head to explode shortly thereafter.

Nathan Downloads, But Is This The End?

Despite the risks, Nathan decides to "download" in order to help Nora and fellow activist Matteo (Paulo Costanzo) discover the truth behind Freeyond.

Freeyond was created by billionaire David Choak (William B. Davis) and Oliver Kannerman (Barclay Hope) using the data the latter stole from Nathan prior to his death in Season 1.

The company claims it will allow those from low income households to "upload" for free and live a carefree afterlife in their facility, but Nora and Nathan are certain there's more to it than that.

In a dramatic moment in the finale, Nathan, now downloaded back into his regrown body, has a nosebleed while en route to Freeyond's base, the first sign that the transfer didn't work and his head could explode at any minute.

Daniels chose not to give too much away when discussing this big moment, and he told Newsweek there are multiple ways the story could play out in a future Season 3.

"[Nathan] does debate it before doing it, and he points out that, you know, there are a number of pigeons who have survived the procedure, but there's also a number of others who haven't so it's definitely something to worry about," he said.

"But I don't think it's 100 percent, you know. [It's not] known how his body will react. He is quite young and healthy."

Ingrid Has a DNA Sample

Another big moment in the finale saw Nathan's spurned ex-girlfriend Ingrid Kannerman (Allegra Edwards) find some of his DNA on an old hairbrush.

Ingrid was the one to have Nathan's body regrown in the first place and as she looks at the strand of hair she says she will be a "really good mommy," suggesting she wants to use Nathan's DNA to make the baby he refused to have with her virtually in Lake View.

While this is one possibility, it may also mean there's a second Nathan on the horizon as the finale also showed a back-up file of him was being uploaded into Lake View following his "download" into the real world.

For Daniels it's not so clear cut: "I'm not sure she's using the hair for the baby or possibly to grow another one of him in the in the tank, so I think that's up in the air.

"And, you know, we're writing. We don't have a pickup for season 3 [yet], but we're writing it, and I've worked out a lot of these issues, but I'm not really allowed to hint at."

The showrunner added that if they don't get a third season at Prime Video then he would love to "have a graphic novel or something to wrap it up" for fans.

Aleesha is Rising in the Ranks, Does She Have an Ulterior Motive?

While Nora has been focused on solving the mysteries around Freeyond, her co-worker Aleesha (Zainab Johnson) has been rising in the ranks at Horizon.

The finale saw Aleesha get promoted to vice president at Horizon, but the question is whether there is more to her decision to take the job than meets the eye.

"What I'll say is that I believe that her desire to succeed is pretty sincere and motivated," Daniels teased. "But, I don't think she has any notion of what that's going to lead to, in terms of choices she may have to make."
