France Star Kylian Mbappe Suffers Broken Nose at Euros

France star Kylian Mbappé broke his nose on Monday at the Euros and will undergo surgery, the French Federation confirmed. Fabrizio Romano reported the news on X.

Mbappé suffered the injury in the waning minutes of France's 1-0 defeat over Austria in their opening match of the 2024 Euros. Mbappé went down in the 85th minute after going for a header and hitting his face into the shoulder of Austrian defender Kevin Danso.

Mbappé went down in immediate pain, and stayed on the ground as his bloody nose got attended by trainers. Here's a video of the play:

Mbappé tried to continue playing, but assessed a yellow card in the 90th minute for coming on without the permission of the fourth official. He was then subbed off shortly after.

Mbappé has now officially suffered a broken nose, and his status for France's next match on Friday against Netherlands is currently unclear. If Mbappé is able to play, he'll surely be wearing a protective shield over his face.

France is one of the favorites to win the Euros, which would be their first win at the tournament since 2000. Italy is the defending champs, looking to defends its win in the 2020 Euros (which took place in 2021) over England. England is the current favorite to win the tournament.

France got off to a good start with a win over Austria, but things will only get harder with matchups against the Netherlands and Poland coming up. The Netherlands took down Poland 2-1 on Sunday, thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst. They're among the favorites to win the tournament, too.

Mbappé will get surgery in Düsseldorf and hope to get back on the pitch as soon as possible. Without Mbappé, France would face a very tall task of trying to advance in this tournament. France won 1-0 on Monday thanks to an own goal by Maximilian Wöber of Austria.

Mbappé will look to win his first Euros after falling just short of a World Cup win against Argentina in 2022. Mbappé helped lead France to a World Cup win in 2018, but they fell short in the Euros in 2021, losing to Switzerland in the Round of 16.

This tournament comes at a busy time for Mbappé, who recently announced he was leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid. Mbappé will join Real Madrid after the Euros. For now he's focused on winning a major title for his country.

There should be many updates on Mbappé's health between now and their next match on Friday.

UPDATE:

Mbappé will not undergo surgery, and will instead have treatment over the next few days, per the French Football Federation.

"Kylian Mbappé has suffered a broken nose," the French Federation statement read. "He is back in camp with the rest of the squad and will undergo treatment in the coming days without undergoing immediate surgery. A mask will be constructed in order to enable the French team's No. 10 to consider resuming competition after a period of treatment."

Mbappé has been ruled out for Friday's game against Netherlands.

Correction 6/18/24, 2:46 p.m. ET: This article was altered Tuesday morning following a change in reports on Mbappè's plans. He will not undergo surgery but will miss Friday's game.
