Lights Recalled Nationwide After Person Dies: Full List of Impacted Stores

A widespread light recall was issued this week following reports that a consumer died while using the specific product.

On Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Good Earth Lighting Inc., of Mount Prospect, Illinois, was issuing a voluntary recall for its Good Earth Rechargeable Integrated Lights.

According to the recall, over 1.2 million of the specific light products are included in the recall.

The recall was prompted "following the report of a consumer who died." According to the CPSC, the company also received reports from another consumer last year "who was treated for smoke inhalation when the product overheated and caused a fire in their home."

"Good Earth Lighting is aware of nine additional reports of lights overheating, including six that resulted in fires and property damage," CPSC said in a press release. "This recall involves rechargeable lights with model numbers starting with RE1122, RE1145, RE1362 and RE1250. In addition, about 37,800 lights were sold in Canada. The model number is printed on a white sticker on the back of the light."

The recall announcement states that the batteries within the lights can overheat, which can lead to the light's plastic housing igniting in flames, "posing fire and burn hazards to consumers."

In a statement to Newsweek, Good Earth Lighting Inc. said, "Consumers put their trust in our company when they choose our environmentally friendly and cost-efficient lighting products. That is why we make the extra effort to ensure that our lighting fixtures and their components always meet all applicable safety standards."

According to the recall announcement, the Good Earth Rechargeable Integrated Lights, were sold at several different stores across the U.S. Newsweek has compiled a list of the stores impacted below.

The recalled lights were also sold online at Goodearthlighting.com, Amazon.com, Lowes.com, as well as on QVC.

The products were sold at these stores and online marketplaces from October 2017 to January 2024, the announcement said. The lights cost around $20 for a single unit and $35 for a bundle.

"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lights, and contact Good Earth Lighting to receive a free replacement light of at least equal value to the purchase price of the recalled light, including shipping, at no charge. Consumers will be asked to write the date and initial next to the model number on the back of the light, and write 'Recalled' on the front of the light," the announcement said.

The recall also noted that consumers interested in receiving the "replacement light" will be asked to upload photos to the company's website at goodearthlighting.com/productrecall.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we removed the lights involved in these incidents from sale to the public in January...Good Earth Lighting will continue to hold ourselves to the highest quality and safety standards so that consumers feel safe and confident in their decision to purchase our highly energy-efficient and eco-friendly lighting products," the company told Newsweek.
