Mike Johnson's Reaction After Losing House Vote Goes Viral

A clip of House Speaker Mike Johnson reacting to the chamber voting not to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has gone viral on social media.

On Tuesday the House voted by 216-214 against impeaching Mayorkas over his handling of the migration crisis in a dramatic loss for the Republican speaker.

An eight-second clip of Johnson announcing the result was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of self-styled "pro-democracy" media outlet Meidas Touch.

In the footage Johnson says "the resolution is not adopted" before receiving a written note and repeatedly banging down his gavel. Filipkowski added: "U mad, bro?"

The video has received more than 160,000 views and 5,300 likes from X users.

Other X users criticized Johnson in response to the post, with Johnny Rocko posting: "Johnson is the weakest speaker ever, replacing McCarthy for that dishonor. The only reason it went to the floor is because of Trump and his extreme MAGA cult. Nancy [Pelosi] would have never let that happen. McConnell used to be strong, but Trump has broken him like every other Senator."

Another user posted: "These guys are the Tea Party with skim milk."

House Republicans attempting to impeach Mayorkas had accused the homeland security secretary of a "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" and "breach of public trust" with regard to migration policy.

The articles of impeachment stated: "In large part because of his unlawful conduct, millions of aliens have illegally entered the United States on an annual basis with many unlawfully remaining in the United States."

Four House Republicans joined Democrats to prevent the impeachment being passed, including Rep. Blake Moore of Utah, who changed his vote at the very end thereby avoiding a 215-215 tie and allowing the bill to be reconsidered at a later date.

In a statement shared with The New York Times following Tuesday's vote, Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Mia Ehrenberg said: "House Republicans will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution for political gain, rather than working to solve the serious challenges at our border."

In a second defeat for Johnson on Tuesday, the House voted by 250 votes to 180 in favor of giving extra aid to Israel in a stand alone bill that President Joe Biden had pledged to veto if passed, but this failed as it fell short of the required two-thirds majority.

It came after House Republicans made it clear they wouldn't back a bipartisan Senate package agreed on Monday combining immigration reform with additional funding for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Johnson firmly rejected the agreement saying it would be "dead on arrival" in the House.

Update 2/7/24, 4:07 a.m. ET: This article has been updated with further information.

Correction 2/7/24 9:30 a.m. ET: This article has been corrected to note the House voted 250-180 for additional aid for Israel, not against as originally stated, with the measure not passing because of the lack of the requisite two-thirds majority.
