A New Jersey man's magical initiative has helped find shelter dogs new homes in time for the holidays.
For the past five years, John Stessel has been working on the Magic for Shelter Dogs project, using his enchanting tricks to bring joy to the dogs and potential adopters.
"As a kid I received a magic kit, and I have been in love with it ever since. But what truly inspires me with magic is finding ways to use my magic to bring joy in the world," Stessel told Newsweek.
The recent success of the project was highlighted in a collaboration with TBS, the Town of Hempstead Animal Rescue, and director Rob Bliss.
In a heartwarming video Stessel's magical prowess is seen in action as he performed alongside some of the dogs that were looking for homes.
Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet "Shelter Watch Report" found. Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
Thankfully, there are plenty stories of dogs getting their own happy endings before Christmas, like the blind and deaf dog that has been adopted just in time for the holidays. But for every happy ending, there are stories of dogs that are still waiting.
"I recently collaborated with St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center on another 'Magic for Shelter Dogs,' resulting in every dog getting adopted!" Stessel proudly said. The collaboration was even featured on Good Morning America, spreading the magic even further.
Stessel shared his dedication to the magical project on Reddit's popular r/aww subreddit where the footage has melted hearts.
"I'm not a dog person, but this put the biggest smile on my face," said one commenter. While another Reddit user wrote: "This was so sweet. I'm so glad you were able to help show how sweet rescues are. Loved it."
Another viewer said: "I love this and happy to hear the pups [have] new homes!"
As the holiday season approaches, Stessel's Magic for Shelter Dogs project really has been able to bring some magic to dogs in need and their new families.
