Hank Gilman, former Deputy Editor of Fortune, named Editorial Director of Newsweek

Melissa Jewsbury, Veteran of Men's Health & Elle, Promoted to Managing Editor

NEW YORK, NY (April 2, 2019) - Newsweek's Global Editor-in-Chief Nancy Cooper today announced that noted journalist Hank Gilman has been named to the newly created role of Editorial Director. Working on both online and print content, he will be reporting directly to Cooper.

Previously, Gilman spent 8 years as Deputy Editor of Fortune Magazine. Earlier in his career, he worked as a senior editor at Newsweek and a reporter at the Boston Globe and the Wall Street Journal. He is also the author of the Portfolio/Penguin book, "You Can't Fire Everyone," and co-founder of the editorial content firm, High Water Press LLC. Gilman received The Minard Editor Award from UCLA's Anderson School of Management and the Gerald Loeb Foundation in 2011.

"Hank has an unparalleled track record in writing and editing for world-class media outlets," said Cooper. "He's a terrific story editor and a newsroom leader, and he'll be invaluable to our journalists as a resource and guidepost. We're delighted to have him on board."

"I'm excited to return to Newsweek working with Nancy and her talented editorial team to cover everything from politics and healthcare to the environment and technology. It's a terrific opportunity," added Gilman.

In tandem, Cooper also announced that Melissa Jewsbury has been promoted to Managing Editor. She previously served as the news organization's Production Director.

Prior to coming on board at Newsweek, Jewsbury worked at Rodale's Men's Health, most recently serving as Managing Editor. Before that, she was Assistant Managing Editor at Hearst's Elle. Earlier in her career, she held various editorial and sales roles at Hachette Filipacchi U.S., Tennis Magazine, and Miller Sports Group.

"Since joining Newsweek as Production Director eight months ago, Melissa has worked miracles across the magazine, improving communication and efficiency within the team as well as with our outside vendors and international partners," Cooper said. "In her new role as Managing Editor she will oversee the entire magazine process: streamlining the workflow, facilitating relationships between departments and setting day-to-day priorities so we can focus on producing the strongest, smartest magazine possible."

Hank Gilman has a BA in Journalism from the University of South Carolina, and received a dual Master's degree in Journalism and Economics from Indiana University. Melissa Jewsbury has a BA in Music from the University of Connecticut.
