Writer singles out big donor to Veterans Memorial Plaza project

Daytona Beach News-Journal

To the Editor and Supporter of Veterans:

The groundbreaking for the Veterans Memorial Plaza in Daytona Beach took place on the morning of June 20, 2024.  Once completed, among other things, it will pay honor with plaques naming Volusia County veterans who died in military service.

A crowd gathers for the groundbreaking ceremony for the Veterans Memorial Plaza on June 20, 2024, on City Island next to the Tom Staed Veterans Memorial Bridge in Daytona Beach.

It will also be a place where formal memorial services can be held or just that little piece of earth where one can sit and reflect on their loved one. The idea for the Veterans Memorial Plaza came about in 2012 from Mr. Josh Wagner who at that time was a member of the Volusia County Council.

Josh, now a local attorney, pursued his goal of providing local veterans who paid the ultimate a place to be recognized and continues to support the project today.

Many people have great ideas but never follow up on them.  Josh not only had the idea but felt so strongly about it that he contributed $100,000 of his money to see the project to fruition.  As a retired US Army veteran and I am sure I speak for many others, let's offer a big "thank you" to Josh for his vision and personal support.
