The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced on Tuesday the appointment of former cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the national cricket team.

Jay Shah, the board's secretary, said on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), "It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team."

"Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward."

India was crowned the T20 World Cup Champion on June 29 after a thrilling victory over South Africa, ending their 13-year wait for an ICC Trophy.

Gambhir, too, spoke about the appointment on X. "India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life," he said. "I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud."

The T20 World Cup also brought down the curtains on Rahul Dravid's stint as the head coach of the Indian team and the T20I careers of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.

Mumbai drew to a standstill last week when a sea of people converged at Marine Drive for the victory parade of the Indian cricket team.
