Misuse of amniocentesis
Abstract
KIE: In India, despite a government ban and a campaign by women's groups, amniocentesis for sex determination and subsequent selective abortion of female fetuses are being practiced on a large scale. Many Indian gynecologists do not consider the practice unethical but view it as a solution to the conflict between the need to control population and the desire for sons. Neither the Indian Medical Association nor the Medical Council of India has taken a public stand on the issue.
