An 11-year-old girl was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after she was shot in a Miami neighborhood on Tuesday, authorities said.

The shooting happened inside an apartment at a building in the area of Northwest 2nd Avenue and Northwest 17th Street in Overtown, Miami Police officials said.

After the incident, the child was driven by a family member to a local hospital with an apparent gunshot wound, police said.

NBC6 cameras captured police tape surrounding a Nissan that was parked outside the emergency entrance at Holtz Children’s Hospital.

The girl was in critical condition, officials said. Multiple people were being questioned about the shooting.

Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales said investigators were trying to determine whether someone shot the girl or she accidentally shot herself.

"We don't know the details of the incident. It’s very early in the investigation and it’s active as we are still looking into what happened inside the apartment," Morales said.

Jackie Wright, who lives in the neighborhood, said she saw the young girl and her father outside not long before she was shot.

“She's a nice little girl, but it's so unfortunate this happened to her,” Wright said.

Wright said shortly after, the child's father came outside holding his daughter and was yelling for help before getting in a car.

“The father came and brought the baby out and she was bleeding,” Wright said. “He was saying, help me, help me and got in his car and left to the hospital,” Wright said.

People in the community hope the child pulls through and police hold the person responsible accountable.

“Everyone keep your prayers for the little girl, prayer works, God is always real,” Wright said.

Police said there was no danger to the public and that everyone involved was accounted for.
