A large police presence was visible Monday evening in suburban Elgin as law enforcement investigated a shooting involving an off-duty police officer, authorities said.
The shooting was reported at around 4:35 p.m. near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and National Street. While the specifics of the incident remain unclear, the Kane County State's Attorney's Office said an off-duty officer was involved, and the officer isn't a member of the Elgin Police Department.
NBC Chicago spoke to one witness who heard several shots from a block away.
"Suddenly I heard six, seven shots," the witness said. "If it was like one or two, I believe it was like a firework because the Fourth just went by... but it was like pretty quick...We were just staying inside the store. All we saw, there was a cop helping the child, like he was struggling or some stuff like that. The cop was trying to save that child."
The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force was leading the investigation into the shooting, according to the state's attorney's office.
The intersection of Walnut and National remained closed at around 6:45 p.m. and was slated to remain shut down while the investigation is conducted, authorities said. Additional information hadn't been released as of late Monday.
