The rupture of thin liquid films has mostly been studied for supported films, where the substrate creates ambiguity in identifying the processes at film level that lead to rupture. Focusing on spontaneous rupture, the authors portray the complete life-cycle of freely suspended films of pure liquid, corroborating that deterministic hole formation precedes the stochastic spontaneous rupturing of thin films.
