Amid a heat advisory from the National Weather Service, Metro Nashville’s Office of Homeless Services is activating free resources and services to assist unhoused people during the extreme heat on July 3 and 4.

Wednesday’s expected maximum temperature is around 97 degrees, with the heat index value reaching around 110 degrees. The forecast for Thursday includes a similar temperature and heat index with possible showers and thunderstorms.

For Wednesday and Thursday, Metro-sanctioned services include free bus passes and “cool rides” to the Nashville Rescue Mission or a safe location from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To request rides to cool locations, people can call 615-844-3399. Outreach workers will be distributing services and bus passes. Encampment support will also be deployed and will include the distribution of water, bug spray, sunscreen, cool-ride bus passes and coordination of additional services.

Because cooling shelters might be operating on various schedules due to Independence Day, the OHS encourages people to verify availability before going. A press release from the office says the OHS will “evaluate the weather daily and respond accordingly.”

Locations to get relief from the heat and additional resources are included in the list below. Hours, availability and services vary, so check those before going.
