Sierra Ferrell has had a mighty busy few years. Following the release of her 2021 Rounder Records debut Long Time Coming — a sterling album that pulls from folk, blues, country and lots more — she spent an extensive amount of time on the road, including a great set at Bonnaroo and a wild hometown New Year’s Eve party at Brooklyn Bowl. Ferrell also took home the Emerging Artist of the Year trophy from the Americana Music Association’s Honors and Awards in 2022. Following the announcement of her next LP Trail of Flowers on Thursday, she made her television debut in high style, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

With her ensemble digging hard into the driving rhythm, Ferrell performed “Fox Hunt.” She talked with author, ace journalist and sometime Scene contributor Marissa R. Moss for a Rolling Stone feature about the tune, which grew out of her anxiety about what contemporary technology is doing to us and our survival skills. In the conversation, Ferrell notes that it’s also a nod to her fellow West Virginia-born songsmith John R. Miller, who once had a band called The Fox Hunt; prominent bass and drums anchor the ominous melodies of fiddles dancing around a droning tone.

See that above. Below, check out the music video for “Dollar Bill Bar,” a song from Trail that’s about the fleeting nature of romance. It’s stylistically closer to ’70s country-rock, another showcase for Ferrell’s exceptional stylistic diversity.

Trail of Flowers is out March 22 — visit your favorite record store for preorder details, or check out this handy link for lots of other options. The release comes right on the heels of Ferrell’s two-night debut headlining the Ryman; Nikki Lane opens the first show on March 20, Vaden Landers plays on March 21, and you can check out your ticket options via the Ryman’s site. Keep up with Ferrell on Instagram for more.
