Booze Hound: The Saucer Paloma at Flying Saucer

A couple things right off the bat here: I know I’m sending you to a beer bro’s palace for a cocktail. And it’s possible you don’t think that beer bro’s palace is even a particularly good spot for beer. But hear me out.

Flying Saucer — the bar behind the Union Station Hotel — is often full of lawyers on weeknights and tourists who’ve wandered from Lower Broadway on the weekends. The bar makes a satisfying twist on the paloma, a drink traditionally made with tequila, grapefruit soda, lime juice and simple syrup. But Flying Saucer’s Saucer Paloma subs the soda with a grapefruit-flavored beer and uses much more of it than the traditional drink uses of soda. The Saucer Paloma is $9 ($7 on Fridays) and is made with equal parts Schöfferhofer Grapefruit, simple syrup, Trianon Tequila Reposado and lime juice. The result is refreshing, somewhat bubbly and perfectly tart — maybe better suited for summer, but absolutely acceptable to sip while sitting on a couch in the bar on a cold day, too.
