Supper Club on Belmont

Every year around the time of the Scene’s annual Iron Fork culinary competition, I take a little time to think fondly of our late editor, Jim Ridley. The memory of my fellow co-workers soldiering on to put on the event on April 7, 2016, while we were all basically going through the motions knowing that our fearless leader still lay in a coma after a cardiac episode a week earlier reveals the strength of the staff and dedication to the mission. Tragically, Jim passed away the day after Iron Fork, but he is remembered each and every day around our offices.

So that’s why a piece of news I saw last week put a little smile on my face. I thought about how pleased Jim would have been to discover the new Dinner and a Movie promotion that the Belcourt Theatre and Supper Club on Belcourt (SCOB) have established. When screening a movie in a dark theater at the Belcourt, Jim was in his element, thinking up punny bons mots and sensitive observations to include in his next review. And he loved food with a truly joyful and open heart. Our occasional trips to check out a new restaurant or food truck together were always a highlight of any week, and he was a thoughtful and considerate eater with a desire to lift up small restaurants by spreading the word about his latest find. We all really miss him!

So I’m going to avail myself of this new discounted dining program soon and think of Jim. All you have to do is show your Belcourt ticket stub before or after a movie, and SCOB will offer deeply discounted deals on selected food and drink items.

The Belcourt Theatre

I’d like to think that Jim would make the connection with the number eight as being lucky in many cultures, including Chinese, Indian and Japanese traditions. It’s lucky for us, because SCOB is offering some of their most popular menu items, beers and wines that normally price in the $12 to $26 range for just $8 as part of the promotion. The deal is good for one drink and one menu item per ticket on the day of the performance.

“We’re excited to join forces with our neighbor The Belcourt Theatre and offer the community a perfect pairing for an evening out in the neighborhood,” says SCOB co-owner Robert Higgins in the official announcement. “Being steps from the theatre, this collaboration makes a lot of sense and provides a great value for participants.”

That sounds like a fantastic plan, and make sure to think of Jim when you pass through the lobby that bears his name!
