Sumo + Sushi

I’ve heard of stranger events than combining sushi and sumo, and that’s exactly what attendees will get at the upcoming Sumo + Sushi event coming to The Fairgrounds Nashville on July 12-14. The extravaganza will feature exhibition matches of sumo wrestling, traditional Japanese drumming demonstrations and ceremonies, and a presentation from Hawaiian sumo legend Konishiki sharing firsthand experiences of his life in the sport. Drinks will be available, and premium tickets will include a bento box of sushi, sashimi and other Japanese treats.

The seating is in the round (well, actually in the square), and most seats will be first come, first served, so get there early for the best view. Or you can pay extra for Front Row or Sky Suite tickets in advance to receive extra food-and-drink perks.

The shows will last approximately 90 minutes, with three acts and intermissions in between. All of the performances are 21-plus except for the matinee on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., and there will not be a discounted price for the young ’uns if they want to get in on the action.

Of course, there’s no dedicated sushi restaurant at the fairgrounds, but the menus for the bento boxes from BentOn for the New York City show look pretty impressive. Besides, you’re there for the spectacle anyway. Tickets are on sale now, so if you want to be a part of the show, jump on it!
