JW Marriott Cabana Club

It’s hotter than hell’s front door out there. But the JW Marriott is fearlessly oblivious to the fact that their rooftop is 33 stories closer to the sun than street level, because they’ve have slated a couple of fun series overlooking the teeming masses below — events where you can drink and learn as the sun sets.

The first is a Rooftop Wine Dinner Series, where the JW Marriott team promises guests will feel like they’re dining in a hillside vineyard, enjoying a four-course meal paired with wines specially selected by the hotel’s chef and resident wine expert. The duo will introduce each course and share tasting notes and the flavor profiles that informed their choices so you can be a better home sommelier. Tickets are $125 and available at the series website. Six glasses of wine, the meal and valet parking are included in the price, although ride-sharing is strongly suggested. (Repeat: six glasses of wine!)

Here’s the schedule and themes of each upcoming dinner:

  • Wednesday, July 10, 7 to 9 p.m. — Rosé All Day!
  • Wednesday, Aug. 7, 7 to 9 p.m. — World of Sake
  • Wednesday, Sept. 11, 7 to 9 p.m — California Is King

If mixed drinks are more your jam, JW Marriott is also offering a Rooftop Pool Deck Cocktail Class and Tasting Series, where attendees will learn techniques and recipes from the master mixologists on the staff to create classic cocktails and new concoctions. Expect premium spirits and other ingredients, including fresh herbs and aromatics plucked straight from the property’s rooftop garden. Guests will also hear stories about what stimulated the creative juices behind the innovative cocktails. Tickets are $45 and are available by clicking reservations here.

Make plans to attend any or all of these fun classes:

  • Wednesday, June 26, 6 to 7 p.m. — featuring Hard Truth Distilling Co.
  • Wednesday, July 24, 6 to 7 p.m. — featuring House of Suntory
  • Wednesday, Aug. 21, 6 to 7 p.m. — featuring Komos Tequila
  • Wednesday, Sept. 25, 6 to 7 p.m. — featuring St. George Gins and Amaros

Paella

Head over to Love & Exile in East Nashville this Saturday, June 29, for Conexión Américas' fifth annual Battle of the Paellas, where four teams will face off to see whose rice is the most nice. A panel of judges and all attendees will have the chance to sample four different paellas from 12:30 to 2 p.m., followed by drinks and dancing until 5.

Competing for the title are personal chef, blogger and recipe developer Charles Hunter III, Jamaican chef and Caribbean cuisine ambassador Chef OMR, chef Queen Cherie (a Louisiana native known as “the Queen Dat Brings Tha Flava From Da Bayou”) and a trio of chefs who go by the moniker “The Boys.”

Tickets for the 21+ event include the paella tasting plus one free featured drink. Additional beverages can be purchased at the bar, and all proceeds benefit Conexión Américas and the nonprofit’s efforts to serve the local Latinx community. Buy your $60 ticket today at the event website.
